2027 Chevrolet Bolt Preview

2027 Chevrolet
Bolt

The Chevrolet Bolt blazed new trails when it debuted in 2017 as the Bowtie brand’s first mass-market electric vehicle. This subcompact five-door brought innovative power technology, good range, and affordability to the then-developing EV segment. After two generations, the Bolt went on hiatus following the 2023 model year, but with a promise to return. General Motors is living up to its commitment by launching a new Bolt that will debut in 2026.

Available under the 2027 model year banner, the redesigned Chevrolet Bolt will return with new technology, faster charging, and a familiar price. Its comeback also serves to celebrate the nameplate’s loyal following. Production is scheduled to begin this winter at GM’s Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas. Full details about the 2027 Bolt will come later. In the meantime, we’ve compiled what we know so far.

Design and Powertrain

The 2027 Bolt will keep the compact hatchback form that made the original practical while introducing sharper detailing and a more athletic stance. Inside, expect a revamped cabin featuring a streamlined dual-display dashboard and a column shifter to replace the center console lever and free up space.

Initial reports indicate that the Bolt trim range will include the LT and RS. If that holds true, it will mark the first time the sporty RS grade will be part of the Bolt’s lineup. Power will come from GM’s latest X76 electric drive unit, which was developed in-house to improve efficiency and reduce rare-earth material use. The system features front-wheel drive and a single electric motor producing an estimated 210 horsepower. The 65-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery will provide a GM-estimated 255 miles of range. Regenerative braking and one-pedal driving will be part of the model to maximize efficiency.

The Bolt’s charging speed should take a significant leap forward with this redesign. It will support Level 3/DC fast charging up to 150 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% recharge in about 26 minutes—over twice as fast as the previous generation. Level 2/240-volt charging at 11.5 kW adds 40 miles of range per hour. The new Bolt will also be marked by Chevrolet’s first native NACS charging port, giving owners direct access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. Available vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional capability will allow the car to power a properly equipped house during outages. Look for cargo space to be around 16 cubic feet behind the second row and expands to 56-plus cubic feet when the back seats are folded flat.

Standard and Available Features

A more complete breakdown of standard and optional features by trim will be available from Chevrolet closer to the start of production. Both trims will host a newly configured dashboard with an 11-inch digital instrument display and an 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The platform will have Google built-in with access to Google Maps and other popular apps. Despite the new design, Chevrolet plans to retain physical climate and audio controls. Both trims will ride on 17-inch aluminum wheels, while the RS will stand out with black roof rails and other unique exterior accents. Options should include a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and wireless device charging.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

Chevrolet promises over 20 standard advanced driver-assist technologies, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with front pedestrian detection and intersection support, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert with braking, rear automatic braking, side bicycle alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, GM’s Safety Alert Seat, and rear seat reminder. Available upgrades will include Super-Cruise hands-free highway driving, a surround-view monitor, and traffic sign recognition. Multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a rearview monitor will also protect the Bolt’s occupants.
